Al Gore for president!
I don’t write this lightly. Sunday Morning, as I sat down at my desk, the atomic clock that gives me the day, date and meteorological information showed this:
The HORROR! I didn’t move to Sunny Sandy Eggo for this! We need to stop global warming and Al Gore is the man that can lead us to the promised land.
Just when we thought the Zell Miller nightmare was over, up pops Joe Lieberman. And to think he was this close to being one heart beat away from the Oval Office.
Old Joe has come out in support of the president’s plan to escalate his war, not just in Iraq either. The president rattled his sabers at Iran and Syria as well and, we find out, he personally authorized the detention of the Iranian diplomats. Apparently there is some evidence the Iranians had been bringing in bomb equipment in diplomatic pouches –
Is this the height of hypocrisy or what! Bush is threatening Syria, but apparently Assad’s country wasn’t such an enemy when Bush had detainees sent to Syria — as in Extraordinary Rendition — to be tortured in this “War on Terrorism.” “Thanks for digging holes in that guy’s body for us, but now we’re back to being enemies.”
We have carrier battle groups circling around the Persian Gulf just to make a presence for the Iranians to consider. The same neocon fools who talked Bush into starting this war are now advocating we go to war with Iran and Syria and Bush is listening! On Meet the Press Sunday Tim Russert went after Bush’s Chief of Staff Stephen Hadley with the pertinent question, if they were wrong about weapons of mass destruction, wrong about Hussein’s involvement in 9/11, wrong about the number of troops it would take to subdue Iraq, wrong about sectarian violence, just wrong in the strategies in Iraq, why should anyone believe another surge would change anything?
Hadley, of course, had no direct answer. All he could say is that Americans want to win the war, ignoring the fact that 70% of Americans want our troops out of Iraq — NOW!
On Hardball with Chris Matthews Former C.I.A. operator Gary Bernsten, pointed out the obvious: the Iraqi forces have not shown a willingness to take the fight to the insurgents and sectarian militias and with this troop surge in Baghdad, we will see U.S. troops going house-to-house, kicking in the doors and otherwise becoming targets.
Let’s not forget the ethnic cleansing component here, which Matthews brought up: basically, the “Iraqi” Army is comprised of Shia militias and they have been systematically murdering and terrorizing the Sunni residents in and around the capitol. Our troops, if they will be taking their orders from the Iraqi Army, such as it is, they will be targeting Sunnis exclusively, in other words, our troops will take part in ethnic cleansing.
David Ignatius, columnist for the Washington Post, also made a few great observations on Hardball, including this: “If we thought they (the Iraqis) were up to it we wouldn’t be sending in the 20,000 additional troops.”
And now Bush and his neocon minions want us to believe the Iraqi Army is now — magically — up to the task?
Last year in March President Bush said it would be the responsibility of future presidents to extricate our troops from the quagmire that is Bush’s war in Iraq. He was asked this question by a reporter during a news conference: “Will there come a day when there will be no more American forces in Iraq?”
The president’s answer: “That, of course, is an objective. And that will be decided by future presidents and future governments of Iraq.”
We now have the distinct impression that bit of theater has all been forgotten, but it’s clear the president has no intention of ending this debacle during his presidency.
Other news we that should concern every citizen: The Pentagon and the C.I.A. are delving into our banking and financial records, supposedly looking for terrorists –
The new season of 24 started Sunday and part of the story line includes the shredding of the Constitution, all in the name of National Security.
We’re screwed with this current administration. When Bush gave his press conference in March, the toll of U.S. troops killed in Iraq had just passed 2,300. It is now over 3,000. What will it be when Bush leaves office? 5,000? More?
Congress has got to act. This war was lost before it began and it’s up to Congress make a difference. All we’re getting from the President is more of the same — “Stay the course.”
