If Evel fuckin Knievel can live to be 69, than so can I. For those who may not be old enough to remember Evel Knievel, he was the hottest ticket in town for … ten years? … something like that. He made his fame and fortune jumping Harley-Davidson motorcycles over … just about everything. Probably the most famous being the water fountains in front of Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, December 31, 1967. Most famous because he broke so many bones as result. Watch the video: Click Here!
Bring it up because one of the news items on Yahoo is about Knievel and Kanye West settling a lawsuit Knievel brought against West for using his trademarked image/persona in a video.
Jeez … Knievel should have been dead decades ago; should have died jumping Caesar’s Palace! But, he stirred the imaginations of every kid my age. Evel fuckin’ Knievel … these current crop of thrill-seekers … are there any current thrill-seekers?
Oh … Oprah Winfrey is a thrill seeker. For the first time in her public life she’s come out in support of a political figure: Barack Obama. Will it make a difference? Hard to say but Oprah Winfrey is easily the most recognizable name/brand in entertainment and her book club endorsements have made writers number one on the New York Times best sellers list.
Can that work for Obama? Politics ain’t literature, but it would be a mistake to discount the “Oprah effect.”
On the other hand, Hillary has Bill, the most popular Democrat—and easily the most popular politician — criss-crossing the continent. Democrats — and old socialists like me — come out in droves to hear and see the man speak. Does that mean we’ll vote for Hillary? She’s a little too conservative for me. Barack Obama is a little too green, not in that “he’s overly sensitive to environmental issues” way. Too green as in, “Dude! Living overseas when you were ten doesn’t give you foreign policy experience.”
That was about the dumbest thing I’ve heard from a candidate since … the ob/gyn’s want to practice their love.
Of course, I’m not a big supporter of Hillary either. She still defends her vote to authorize the war! (sigh) … Here we have this historic occasion, a woman and an African-American as major candidates in a presidential election — and neither one stirs any real interest, has really anything to offer that says, “I’m the one!”
John Edwards, of course, looks good. He’s really not a top-tier candidate; I think the media are being charitable when they refer to him as such. But, he’s the only second-tier candidate on the Democratic side so … make him a first tier candidate. Clinton and Obama are getting all the press and the accolades; Edwards has slipped in Iowa, it could be iffy but if those were the only three in the race, I’d be voting for Edwards.
You’ll find all three of those candidates in my friends list on MySpace, along with Senators Joe Biden and Chris Dodd and Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Now, if I were to decide my primary vote solely on MySpace activity, my vote would go to Kucinich. Not a day goes by that I don’t receive at least two bulletins from the Kucinich page. Most just advertise the congressman’s next stop, “COME OUT AND SUPPORT DENNIS!” but he does send out some about his policies that bear reading. Kucinich is actually reaching out with his message, which isn’t bashing the other candidates, but promoting his message and vision.
I’m leaning towards the Ohio congressman anyway. Can’t say I dislike any of the Democratic candidates; Dodd and Biden are probably the two most experienced, and therefore the most qualified candidates, but they’re not so diligent about getting their message out as Kucinich is and really, don’t we want someone who is willing and eager to communicate with us? I do anyway.
But, since the California primary is still far off in the future, I haven’t made my decision yet. Back when Obama was just the most talked about unofficial candidate, there actually seemed to be some substance to the man’s agenda. Now that he’s an official candidate he acts like … err … an official candidate.
Not to mention, Congressional Democrats have been less than … err … principled … in their opposition to the president and his agenda. Sure, they talk a good game, but now the president gets to withdraw troops on his timetable and, by golly, don’tcha know, it will just coincidentally take place during the campaign for the general election. Talk about using the troops for political advantage. When will Nancy Pelosi and Jack Reid stand up, kick ass and take names? Geez, maybe John Murtha should be the Speaker of the House.
Forgot what this blog was gonna be about, was distracted by the Evel Knievel thing, but my friends Danielle and Melody (from the previous blog) both told me the mention of them was hilarious! I didn’t even have to jump in the sack with them to give them something to laugh about! … ehhh … (sigh) …
Of course, Lindsay still loves me … You know I’m still seeking my thrills.
