Just five days until Barack Obama is sworn in as President of the United States. I guess we can find a silver lining to the presidency of George Bush (43): we had to have eight years of him to make it possible for an Obama presidency.
We know the Obama haters will be using — highlighting — Barack Obama’s middle name, Hussein, throughout Obama’s entire presidency. They want to be sure we remember his is an Arab-Muslim name and his middle name is the same as the dead guy, Saddam Hussein. We get it Obama haters, you still believe he is a sleeper agent for Al Qa’ida, Usama bin Laden’s secret weapon!
This was funny: when the confirmation hearings were about to begin for Obama’s cabinet appointments the “problems” of some, like Hillary Clinton, were discussed on the two news channels (and Fox) and then dismissed as insignificant. Clinton and her hubby, former president Bill, filled out an exhaustive questionnaire dealing specifically with Clinton’s global initiative. That was supposed to have settled the matter. The Clintons had provided more information than any other former president ever had as to post-presidency activities.
But this is a completely different — and unprecedented — situation. Hillary Clinton is nominated to be the Secretary of State.
After Senators Vitter and Lugar (the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee) said they were not satisfied with all the details of the report, especially as to how future contributions over $50,000.00 would be reported, then all of a sudden the newsies saw great problems with the confirmation of Hillary Clinton. There was always someone on the panel who reminded the others Senator Lugar said Ms. Clinton would be confirmed without any problems, but, without any real drama to talk about, this was it.
Senator David Vitter, many suspect, is trying to rehabilitate his own reputation. He’s the senator that was in the D.C. madam’s client list. As it turns out, Vitter not only employed Washington, D.C. escorts, he had a favorite in Louisiana as well, Wendy Cortez. Her real last name is Ellis. And apparently, despite Vitter’s denials, there are photos of the two.
Personally, I think sex between consenting adults should be legal, regardless if there’s money involved. Besides, there’s always money involved. Even in a bar you have to buy the drunk woman (or man, for that matter) a few drinks before you win the prize.
But, Vitter campaigned on a holier-than-thou moral platform and his hypocrisy, not to mention his lying, makes him contemptible.
Well, besides the Clinton Global Initiative, there’s Timothy F. Geithner. Obama’s pick to head the Treasury apparently didn’t pay all his federal taxes when he worked for the International Monetary Fund (he is now president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York). He paid the taxes, plus interest, years ago, but it’s still a controversy.
Well, that and the fact that he employed a housekeeper whose immigration papers expired while employed by Geithner. But, it’s the tax issue that has the Republicans all squishy over his confirmation, although most people, Republican and Democrat, say he will be confirmed. Just not this week. They had to put a bump in the road to Obama’s inauguration.
Geithner, it should be noted, was first appointed to a treasury job by Ronald Reagan over 20 years ago and then promoted by Bush-41 and President Clinton. He has a long history with the treasury and government in general.
I can hardly wait for January 20th. The Bush and Cheney farewell tour of press conferences and interviews is getting tiresome. More on that another day, President Bush is set to give his last speech later today.

Do you think Conan O’Brian is funny? He may be a great comedy writer, but as a comedian and late night talk show host, not too many laughs. The skits are usually pretty lame and his little “signature” mannerisms: boring. He has great guests though!
In about two months Conan will be taking over the Tonight Show when Jay Leno moves to prime time. Leno is pretty funny, so Conan O’Brian will be a huge disappointment. But he will have good guests.
As I write this, the hot Salma Hayek is on. Don’t know what they’re talking about, her dog saving her life apparently and then her guest star stint on
30 Rock, but it’s all meaningless banter, almost never watch these programs for anything more than to see what the women are wearing and if there will be any “Kodak” moments.
Ever see the movie
Freda? Probably her best film.
There weren’t any Kodak moments. Darn.
