Now we know what Governor Mark Sanford was doing for the past five days: having sex with a mistress in Argentina. The governor, in his earthquake of a press conference, didn’t say he was having sex with this woman in Argentina, but if anyone tells me it’s possible they didn’t have sex in those five days, I’ll laugh in their face.
Here are some inconsistencies in the governor’s tale about his affair with this woman. First of all he said he first met this woman eight years ago, but the “affair” didn’t start until a year ago. Really? I’d be asking (and I’m surprised no one has), when he started this friendship eight years ago did he keep it secret from his wife? It’s important because it goes to his credibility. If he kept this relationship secret from his wife the infidelity began eight years ago. I’m betting as people begin to dig into this issue, we will find the infidelity began a lot earlier than a year ago.
The media and Republican apologists are making a big deal about the governor coming forward today, after disappearing last Thursday. Well, as the governor told us in his press conference, the affair was discovered, he didn’t say by whom, about five months ago. If Governor Sanford is such a standup guy, why didn’t he come forward five months ago when his infidelity was discovered? Maybe because he didn’t (and doesn’t) want to end the affair.
In fact, when asked in the press conference if he ended the affair with the Argentinean … he never answered that question directly. He told us he cried for five days while in Argentina. I’m not buying that either.
Sanford admitted he and his wife are separated, but he didn’t elaborate. He admitted hurting his wife and four sons and that they, he and his family, had been “working through” this affair since it was first exposed five months ago. Really, what that means is Governor Sanford is continuing the affair with the Argentinean and he didn’t come out and admit that.
Been watching MSNBC for the past hour, just by dumb luck I turned the TV on just as Sanford began his press conference, so I’ve been tweeting several newscasters with my questions about and for Governor Sanford.
The real hypocrisy of the press conference was when the governor started misquoting the Bible, asking everyone to forgive him. He mentioned his religious friends, hoping to invoke some Christian sympathy from that religious group, but can you grant absolution if the person isn’t being completely honest?
These holier-than-thou types who insist on telling the rest of us how we should live by their rules, which they proclaim are really God’s rules, have become the most flagrant abusers of these rules. The party of family values? Please! It appears Republicans are “Christians” only when they need public sympathy or votes. When Sanford mentioned his religious friend Cubby Culbertson he trailed off into an unfinished tangent about “C” Street and a Bible study … and then he got back to trying to justify his behavior.
Not to mention, Governor Sanford lied to his wife and children, his staff, the lieutenant governor, and the citizens of South Carolina. He disappeared for five days to, as he admitted, selfishly meet with his mistress. He did so hoping to hide it from the world. It only became a story when people began asking five days ago, “Where’s Governor Sanford?”
Sanford used state resources to facilitate the affair, that can’t be a good thing. At the very least, he drove a government SUV to the airport where it was parked for five days. Wonder if that’s cause for a recall?
It started so innocently, Sanford claims, with an exchange of e-mails. There was no innocence governor.
Last year Elliott Spitzer, once the governor of New York, resigned his office when it was discovered he was having an affair with a New Jersey escort. A really nice one too, I might add. So far, all Sanford has resigned is his title as Chairman of the Republican Governors Association. Oh wow, that was a big sacrifice.
Ten years ago Governor Sanford was calling for President Clinton to resign because the president had eroded the public’s confidence in government. Well governor, were you just taking the talk?
