It was sad, watching G. Gordon Liddy on Hardball with Chris Matthews Thursday. Liddy, a rabid right wing radio talk show host was on defending his view that President Obama isn’t a U.S. citizen.
That Liddy has secured himself to the nut wing of the Republican Party is no surprise. In the 1990’s he built his radio listener base promoting the creepy conspiracies that Clinton confidant and administration official Vince Foster didn’t commit suicide, he was assassinated at the direction of the Clintons in order to seal his silence, presumably concerning stories like the Whitewater scandal and all the women President Clinton schtupped while governor of Arkansas and married to Hillary.
The other big Clinton conspiracy theory, promoted by Liddy as fact, was that a number of Arkansas state troopers were murdered at the behest of the Clintons to keep them silent about all the affairs President Clinton had while governor. Oh yeah, and then there was the lesser known secret, but certainly as juicy in its salacious appeal, that Hillary Clinton didn’t really oppose Bill Clinton having sex with other women because she is a lesbian. Really.
So, there’s no surprise Liddy has tied himself to this latest conspiracy theory. Gotta wonder though, does he also promote the conspiracy that the Bush Administration staged the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 just to consolidate power into the executive branch.
What was sad though was watching this old man, a once vibrant aggressive man, speaking in barely audible tones, grasping at straws when Chris Matthews presented one piece of evidence after another to refute the crazy notion that President Obama is not a U.S. citizen.
Liddy’s only evidence Obama was born in Kenya: a deposition from the step grandmother that she saw President Obama born in a hospital in Mombassa, Kenya. When asked which hospital in Mombassa, Liddy changed the subject and brought up the issue of the military personnel who refuse to serve because they don’t believe the president is the legitimate Commander–in-Chief, as if that is proof the president isn’t a citizen.
That bit of “evidence” has long since been debunked and is the residue of a interview done of Obama’s grandmother in Kenya in which she was misquoted.
It’s absolutely embarrassing and astounding people would believe, after all the evidence that has been provided, President Obama is not a U.S. citizen and there is a conspiracy, going back 48 years, to cover up that fact and that officials from the State of Hawaii (the Republican governor of Hawaii Linda Lingle and the director of Hawaii’s Department of Health and the Registrar of Vital Statistics, Dr. Chiyome Fukino and Alvin Onaka respectively), people in Mombassa, Kenya, Obama’s mother, father and American grandparents, and then all of Obama’s political friends and foes, including Senator John McCain and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, all took part in this massive conspiracy to bring down the government of the United States.
Liddy isn’t the best known of the birthers. No, that would be Rush Limbaugh, Liz Cheney, daughter of the former president, a number of Republican Congressmen who have introduced a bill requiring presidential candidates to present birth certificates when they apply to run for the highest office in the land, Republican Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama (of course) and the most prominent and embarrassing, Lou Dobbs of CNN.
On both his TV and radio programs Dobbs has been stoking the flames of this insanity and yesterday when he wasn’t on his TV program the lovely Kitty Pilgrim refuted all of the birther claims Dobbs had been promoting earlier in the week. Makes you wonder why Dobbs wasn’t present on his own program; and was Pilgrim ordered to perform the unenviable task of refuting her colleague’s claims.
“This would all go away if the president produced a birth certificate.”
No it wouldn’t. After watching G. Gordon Liddy cling to this insanity every time Chris Matthews pointed out the newspaper mentions on the day the president was born, the birth certificate with the file number redacted, the birth certificate without the file number redacted, quoting every public official who has verified President Obama’s U.S. birth — including several Republicans — it’s obvious there is nothing anyone can show G. Gordon Liddy or any of the rest of these wing nuts to satisfy them.
Not to mention, claiming the president isn’t a U.S. citizen is great for TV and radio ratings and if you’re a politician, a Republican politician, what better issue to hook in the nut wing of the extreme right of the Republican Base!
The real reason they are upset with the leadership of the Republican Party: the chairman is a Negro!
Here’s the funniest part of the “Birther Movement”: the two factions, one East Coast the other West Coast are now legally opposed to each other. Seems the East Coast Crew, headed by the top birther himself, attorney Philip Berg, has sued the West Coast Crew, headed by lawyer-dentist Orly Taitz. She (Taitz) called Berg a “Shyster.” If you’d like to read the complaint, Click Here. After a few pages you’ll wonder how these clowns ever gained traction.
Philip Berg is the original birther. He got the whole movement started and has been doing good business with it. Unfortunately for him another attention-starved media hound got into the movement and she wants all the attention. Orly Taitz is representing an Army major who refuses to deploy to a war zone because he doesn’t believe Obama is the legitimate president of the United States.
She also represents Alan Keyes, the wing nut Obama beat in 2004 to become the junior senator from Illinois.
It’s Berg who got the ball rolling last year when the president was just a candidate and about to push Hillary Clinton aside on his way to the nomination. Were it true Obama is not natural born, Hillary Clinton would have taken the nomination from Obama by default. If it were true and, for some inexplicable reason, the Clinton campaign chose not to act on that information, the campaign of Senator John McCain could have won the presidency, or at least force then senator Obama out of the presidential race, sending the Democratic Party into a chaotic maelstrom as they searched for a solution.
Neither Clinton nor McCain took advantage of the information. What could they do? The Obama Campaign provided one piece of evidence after another to prove President Obama was indeed born in Hawaii.
Here’s an interesting factoid: Senator John McCain wasn’t born in the United States. He was born in the Panama Canal Zone.
Of course, if you believe this conspiracy theory, both Clinton and McCain are in on the crime, trying to bring down the U.S. government by putting someone ineligible for the office into the presidency. Liz Cheney, the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, said, on Larry King Live “people are uncomfortable with having for the first time ever, I think, a president who seems so reluctant to defend the nation overseas …”
So, not only is she defending torture, she’s apparently latching on to the birther movement. Wonder how long that will last though. The man who started the movement, Philip Berg, is the same guy who started the conspiracy theory that President Bush and Vice president Cheney orchestrated and ordered the attacks on September 11, 2001, as a ploy to consolidate all government power into the White House.
From a letter Berg posted on his web site in 2007: “It is time for the nations of the world to come forth and take the leadership because of the failure of the United States Government and the States where crimes were committed on 09/11/01, where no thorough investigation and indictments occurred, to investigate, arrest and prosecute the people responsible for the murders on 9/11/01, specifically including George W. Bush and Richard Cheney.”
Wonder when Berg will connect all this to the Kennedy Assassination …
