So … Senator McCain has at least eight homes, but he doesn’t know for sure how many he has. Senator Obama is worth eight million dollars … and John McCain is trying to use that as evidence Obama is an elitist?
Well, the Politico, in This Map, has McCain winning the election, but Zogby has Obama ahead by 3 percentage points. Either way, Obama has lost ground and much of that can be attributed to McCain’s politics as usual — The Karl Rove Method.
Politicians often say, when they’re behind in the polls, you can’t read too much into them. On the other hand, they are a significant barometer of how the populace is leaning at any given time. The Zogby Poll, for instance, was taken between August 12 and 14. That’s just over a week ago. Obama has announced he’s chosen a running mate so he has no doubt received a bit of a bump in those polls.
The Politico map was drawn up … I’m not sure when, but if you look at the top right they have the latest Gallup Poll that puts Obama ahead by one percentage point. It’s a tight race.
McCain can be the elitist, but as long as he’s calling Obama the elitist then that will be the news story. Until the press starts digging into McCain’s finances … and those of his wife. She inherited a 100 million dollar fortune. Let’s see if the press continues to dig into McCain’s life. So far, the Arizona senator has had pretty much of a free ride from the press, even when McCain has contradicted himself, so we can assume — hope — the free ride is over.
One of the reasons bloggers get bad press from the mainline press is because some bloggers often scoop the major news organizations. The usual big time blogs have been out front about McCain and his flip-flopping and down right deceitful statements for months now, and what has the mainstream press chosen to write and talk about? Obama Girl, Obama’s former minister and then just how wonderfully prescient John McCain was when he started calling for “the surge” so many months before it took place.
The truth of that being, McCain was in lockstep with the administration until mid-2006 when the opinion of the nation began to turn against Bush’s war in Iraq. That is the most egregious failing of the major news organizations: they haven’t pushed McCain on his flip-flopping.
McCain made a big deal out of the Obama’s buying a multimillion dollar home and yet McCain has no idea how many homes he and his wife own, Maybe the press will ride this story for a while and maybe McCain will keep referencing it — incorrectly — and the press will have more reason to keep questioning McCain about it.
One policy issue I wish the press would get into, and I applaud Keith Olbermann for bringing it up from time-to-time, is McCain’s abominable record in regards to veteran and service member issues.
McCain took credit, from the president, for the latest G.I. Bill, which McCain actually opposed and didn’t even bother to vote for when it came up. McCain voted “No” for the bill that would have required our troops to have more down time between deployments — despite the DoD reports that tell us this war in Iraq is producing a far higher number of people suffering from PTSD and other emotional and psychological disorders than any previous wars; and that the Pentagon is sending troops into battle on sleep and psychological meds! Primarily because the troops don’t have enough time away from the combat zones of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Not to mention, McCain has, in effect, voted to cut my V.A. benefits, and those of every other veteran, be they Iraq-Afghan vets or otherwise. As the one veteran of the two, you’d expect McCain to lead the way in vet issues, but the vet service organizations that rate politicians ALL give McCain a failing grade.
Obama, on the other hand, has one of the highest ratings in Congress. When will the mainstream press pick up on that little chestnut?
It’s getting hard to write about politics these days. There’s no passion anymore, although when Obama announces his running mate that should be quite interesting. Apparently Senator Clinton is not his choice. Who really thought she would be? My guess, Governor Evan Bayh. Joe Biden carries some baggage, although Biden’s my choice.
So, instead of writing this “political” blog last night, I sat down and watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The movie, not the TV show. Lots of irony in that movie, after 15 years. The three stars, Donald Sutherland, Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry have been overshadowed by Hillary Swank. Oh yeah, and Ben Affleck.
“Ben Affleck is in Buffy,” you ask? Indeed he is! In the scene when the vampire basketball player starts going amuck, he looks at a player from the opposing team and gives the guy the vampire smiles. That guy, Ben Affleck, gets squeamish and gives the ball to the vampire.
You’re probably wondering whom Hillary Swank played. I won’t spoil it for you, go ahead and rent it. I’ll just say she’s one helluva Valley Girl!

And I guessed wrong! Obama did choose Delaware senior senator Joe Biden to be his running mate. McCain’s campaign strategy, put together by Karl Rove protegé Steve Schmidt, has been to attack the opponent’s character. Now the Obama campaign has someone who is very good at responding in kind. Can hardly wait for the convention!
