Irony is the spice of life. No, sarcasm is, irony is the main course. Or maybe it’s like an appetizer. Well, it’s definitely not dessert. Sex is dessert, or at least the prospect or fantasy of sex. Actual sex, with a partner of your choosing, would be like having chocolate mousse with Cherry Garcia ice cream, followed by a nice crème brulée. Hey, if I’m gonna mix metaphors …
So the irony is centered on Rush Limbaugh. He’s the biggest name in the news lately — in more ways than one obviously. I remember when he made a big deal about losing so much weight. It appears he’s put it all back on and then some. But that’s not the irony; weight loss followed by weight gain is pretty common in America and that’s why the diet/health industry is billions of dollars every year.
The irony can be measured in months; some time ago Rush said he hoped President Obama failed. People responded to that and now it’s mushroomed into the president is targeting Limbaugh and, this is the funny part, people are comparing Obama to President Nixon saying President Obama has his own “enemies list” and Rush Limbaugh is at the top of it. That’s pretty funny, except that there are a lot of people who believe such nonsense.
Rush Limbaugh hopes Obama fails, he gets scolded from Democrat and Republican alike, then he fires back, the Republicans then grovel back into his good graces and apologize while the Democrats, including members of the administration, reply in kind.
Television talking heads then discuss the wisdom of the Obama Administration engaging the likes of Rush Limbaugh while questioning who really is the “leader” of the Republican Party. At the moment Limbaugh is, when you consider how many have scurried to his feet, and in some cases, into his lap, to defend $400 million dollar man.
Except for David Frum. He writes of Limbaugh: “And for the leader of the Republicans? A man who is aggressive and bombastic, cutting and sarcastic, who dismisses the concerned citizens in network news focus groups as ‘losers.’ With his private plane and his cigars, his history of drug dependency and his personal bulk, not to mention his tangled marital history, Rush is a walking stereotype of self-indulgence – exactly the image that Barack Obama most wants to affix to our philosophy and our party. And we’re cooperating! Those images of crowds of CPACers cheering Rush’s every rancorous word – we’ll be seeing them rebroadcast for a long time.”
For that Frum is getting pilloried by his own conservative movement. Some actually have claimed that Frum has never been a true conservative, and that he is Canadian! That’s almost as bad as being French! David Frum is not backing down either. I tip my hat to the Canadian!
And there’s the irony. The real fireworks in this kerfuffle isn’t taking place between President Obama and Rush Limbaugh, it’s the circular firing squad taking place in the Republican Party! But, if you think the Republicans are right — or honest — you’d think the White House orchestrated this fight between RNC Chairman Michael Steele and Limbaugh.
To his discredit, Steele has already groveled at the feet of Limbaugh, joined in his supplication by so many Congressional Republicans, there’s no point in trying to list them all.
The spin, from the Republicans is that the White House started this to take everyone’s mind off of the economy and the president’s stimulus bill. Even though the president has been talking almost exclusively about the economy and the effects the stimulus bill will have on the economy. Not to mention the war in Iraq and his plan to have all combat troops withdrawn in 19 months. He’s leaving 50,000 or so in Iraq; they’ll still have targets on their backs.
Conversely, he’s also been talking about the restabilization of Afghanistan and the unstable nation of Pakistan. Now that’s the country that will keep us up at night. They have nuclear weapons and the government is barely functional. And the rumor is, Pakistan is an ally. With friends like that, who needs Iran?
Speaking of which, Secretary of State Clinton is sending envoys to Syria. What a change from the Bush years. Not to mention Iran has been invited to take part in a summit on how to stabilize Afghanistan.
Yet, the focus of the news is the circular firing squad taking place among Republicans and those conservatives who no longer claim to be Republicans and how this has been orchestrated by the Obama White House. And President Obama has an enemies list just like President Nixon. House Minority Leader John Boehner even penned a piece for the Op-Ed page of the Washington Post claiming Obama and the Democrats began planning this back in the fall.
In it Boehner makes the claim that not only is Wall Street against the president’s policies, but “Main Street” as well. In reality, President Obama’s popularity is at unprecedented levels and more people believe the president and Democrats will fix the economy than those who don’t believe in Obama’s policies.
It’s on this fabrication that Boehner and his fellow Republicans build the fabrication that it was the Democrats who created this diversionary sideshow. Despite the number of Republicans who are taking part in the sideshow.
The truth is, the American public has rejected the Republican plan, which is just another replay of the old Republican Standard: TAX CUTS! The same policies of the previous president. In his Op-Ed piece, Boehner talks about the Republican alternative, but he forgets to mention the details because he’s seen the polls, he knows what the American public thinks of the Republican alternative — and it is not favorable for him. Now that’s a diversion!
This is funny: most Republicans don’t want to come out and admit Rush Limbaugh is the defacto leader of the Republican Party, but they don’t want to make him angry either. Former Speaker of the House Tom Delay on the other hand, says Rush Limbaugh is a role model for Republicans and Conservatives alike. In Delay’s world, there’s a difference between Republicans and Democrats, although Delay still considers himself a Republican.
Makes your head spin trying to comprehend the hypocrisy.
