Thanks Lainey! I remember the call! I was at the beach, actually waiting for the bus to go home!
So, rather than regret not being with family on Thursday, I’ll enjoy and be grateful for the “family” of friends I will be sharing the day with around a table of two turkeys and ham and all the fixins ... I’ll take a picture or two!
Maybe next year I can spend Thanksgiving in Colorado, or Wisconsin, or Texas or Florida. Until then, I have plenty to love and appreciate here!
P.S., feel free to call when all are gathered, about to dive in at the Tony and Judy enclave!

Tim, that is a really nice blog today. I do wish you were still coming to Colorado, however, as you know with our family, no one is ever farther away then our own hearts. Okay, and the phone, email, message board and text messages. Do you remember last summer when me and family, plus Rick visited the old neighbers in Milwaukee. we had a huge bbq, visiting and we didn't forget you, we called you and while Jan was holding the phone we snapped a group photo. yep you were there too. that was funny ... yep, Thanksgiving is a good time with family and friends. anyway, I hope you have a wonderful time with your San Diego friends/family. A communal meal is what started it all so you will be totally traditional ...love, Elaine

Great post! Most U.S. citizens have little knowledge of what our friends and neighbors think. In fact, some even are hostile to “foreign” views. I, on the other hand, appreciate them, regardless of whether or not I agree.

I am still surprised a U.S. president is so important to people outside of the States. But that’s just a product of living in such an insular society.

I did not know all that! It appears, from reading the news, there are candidates for Prime Minister ... thanks for the information.

But, you Canadians don’t have an Electoral College that can reverse the will of the majority. An institution like the Electoral College probably wouldn’t work in a parliamentary system.

Still, you know that night who won and lost. Just heard we might know definitively who wins our election Wednesday ... no more jokes about Canada.

"In Canada, where they just finished up their election, the popular vote wins".

Actually, that's not correct.

The "winning team" needs a plurality of votes.

This might help explain, from wikipedia:

"Canadians vote for their local Member of Parliament (MP) only. The party leaders are elected prior to the general elections by party memberships. Parties elect their leaders in run-off elections to ensure that the winner receives more than 50% of the votes. Normally the party leader stands as a candidate to be an MP during an election.

The election of a local MP gives a seat to one of the several political parties. The party that gets the most seats normally forms the government, with that party's leader becoming prime minister. The Prime Minister is not directly elected by the general population, although the Prime Minister is directly elected as an MP within his or her constituency.

Canada's parliamentary system empowers political parties and their party leaders. Where one party gets a majority of the seats in the House of Commons, that party is said to have a "majority government." Through party discipline, the party leader, who is only elected in one riding, exercises a great deal of control over the cabinet and the parliament.

A minority government situation occurs when the party that holds the most seats in the House of Commons still holds less than the opposition parties combined. In this scenario a party leader is selected by the Governor General to lead the government, however, to attempt to create stability, the person chosen must command the support of at least one other party."

Well, regardless of how much money is out there, the small businesses will not be getting any of it — well maybe now they will — so they will be hurt by this crisis. But I have to agree, this bailout will not be the remedy. Unchecked greed will continue to rule Wall Street and Washington. Gordon Gekko wins.

The bailout is a terrible idea. Fundamentally, the 'Main Street' issues that you mention - loans to small business - won't be affected by the bailout. There is more than enough money in the financial system to loan money. The rate at which the Fed has been printing money the last two years has left the banks flush with cash. They simply aren't lending to anyone, not even each other. There is so much 'bad paper' out there in the form of various -- and largely hidden -- derivatives, CDOs, etc that not even all the existing money on the plant (many times over) can cover the losses. Basically, when the rich and power start telling you that the 'ordinary person' is being hurt, it's because they need cover. If the assets that the bailout are going to be so valuable in the future that the American taxpayer could make a profit on them, then why don't the banks and shareholders hang onto them? The answer is simple, they aren't going to be worth anything. Pawning off the bad debt onto the taxpayer is just a way of turning more profit, not fixing the problem. One cannot be cynical enough about this fetid confluence of politicians, bankers and the fixers of the world. The best part, of course, is when this bailout 'medicine' doesn't cure the 'financial system' patient, the cure will be...more of the same medicine. Watch, you'll see. Only this time, it won't be scrutinized at all, it'll just be more 'business as usual' in Washington, sucking ordinary people dry.
